Two-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel needs to put better results on the table if he is to retain his crown, according to Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko.
The German driver has only a solitary win this season and is trailing championship leader Fernando Alonso by 42 points, with Marko pointing out that it’s just not enough.
“We can still win the title, but Vettel must do better in qualifying. He no longer has the domination he had last season,” Marko said in a column in the Bild. “Alonso’s run of form will come to an end soon and we have to be ready.
“One of the Red Bull drivers can become world champion. Even (teammate Mark) Webber,” he added.
Vettel acknowledged that the season has been topsy-turvy so far but expects the championship to settle down in the second half.
“The season is quite long, there are more races, and I am confident that we will be able to win at least one of them, or even more,” Vettel was quoted saying on the official Formula 1 website.
