Sauber opened up a considerable gap to its immediate rivals after both its drivers made significant progress at the German Grand Prix to score 20 valuable points.
Kamui Kobayashi registered his best race result of his career so far with fourth after starting from 12th while teammate Sergio Perez, who was further down in 17th after a penalty, finished sixth.
The Swiss team bettered the points it had scored at the Malaysian Grand Prix earlier this year, where Perez had recorded a podium finish, opening a gap to Williams by 33 points.
“We have been unlucky in the two most recent races,” Kobayashi said. “If we only had qualified better we could have achieved even more.”
Perez meanwhile said that his strategy was compromised as he may have picked up a puncture early in the race which forced him to extend his stint.
