Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone suffered a minor head injury and bruises as he was punched and kicked in a robbery when he was about to enter a central London building on Wednesday night.

The 80-year-old was hospitalised after the attack however he was back to work a few hours later and was doing fine. Ecclestone reportedly lost £200,000 worth of jewellery and his watch in the assault.

At the time of the confrontation, he was with his 31-year-old girlfriend. The Brazilian model, who is a lawyer and a sports marketing agent, was said to be 'shaken' by the episode although she was spared from the battering.

"We were called to reports of a man and woman who had been robbed in south west London at approximately 10.30pm on Wednesday night," said a Metropolitan Police spokesman. "The man, aged 80 years old, was taken to a west London hospital for treatment to a minor head injury. The woman was not injured.

"At this early stage it is believed a quantity of jewellery was stolen but we cannot disclose details of what was stolen as yet. No arrests have been made at this time and inquiries are continuing."

It is believed that the billionaire was specifically targeted by the gang due to his high-profile status.

"There can be little doubt this was a targeted robbery because of who Mr Ecclestone is." a senior police source told The Sun. "The muggers were callous and showed little regard for the victims. They need to be caught."
