PROFILE
Pedro Rodriguez

No other Mexican than Pedro Rodriguez might have fancied racing in Formula One someday as he was the national motorcycle racing champion at the age of 13.
Rodriguez did not just imagine but he turned his vision into reality. In partnership with his brother Ricardo, he created ripples in the Mexican motorcycling and bicycling events and “The Little Mexicans” stirred the circuits with numerous wins.

When Rodriguez was just 18, he drove a Ferrari TR at the Le Mans on the insistence of US Ferrari importer Luigi Chinetti. Meanwhile Ricardo could not take part in the race due to his young age and thus gave way to Rodriguez who went on to take part in the Le Mans for 14 consecutive years. He would be best known for his victory at Le Mans in his Ford GT40.

Rodriguez’s debut in F1 came in a rather bizarre phase of his life. He was already considering retirement from the sport after Ricardo lost his life during the practice session of the Mexican Grand Prix in 1962. In a distressed state, he drove for Lotus in 1963 at the Mexican and the American Grands Prix. Till 1966, he competed sporadically in F1 for Lotus and Ferrari but never came close to his winning best.
After four seasons and eight Grands Prix, Rodriguez paved his way up the rankings and won the very first Grand Prix in South Africa in 1967 which was also the first event of the season. Racing a Maserati for the Cooper Car Company, he quickly upgraded himself from being an underdog to a potential threat for the champions. The rest of the season turned out to be pretty well for him with enough points on the board to finish fifth in the drivers’ standings.

The following season, he raced with the Owen Racing Organisation and finished on the podium thrice to stand sixth in the World Drivers’ Championship. However in 1969, during his stint with the Ferraris and the BRMs he managed just three points in a season that lacked lustre and did not match up to the expectations. In 1970, Rodriguez had another date with victory at the Belgian Grand Prix and finished second in America to earn a seventh spot in the drivers’ run. His last finish in the 1971 French Grand Prix was in a BRM, and he did justice to his talent as he claimed a second place in the race.

Rodriguez had earned a status of being the best driver of the era to race in wet conditions. An all-round racer that he was, he won the championship in the World Championship of Makes in a Porsche 917, raced in CanAm, NASCAR and won the North American Ice Racing Championship in 1970. He was killed in an Interserie sports car race on July 11, 1971 at Nuremberg in Germany. He had shaped his illustrious career virtually at all levels of motorsports and he did it impeccably.
