PROFILE
Luigi Musso

Luigi Musso was born on 28th July 1924 in Rome. He was the youngest of three brothers who were all racing drivers. From a young age, his passion and interest in the sport was evident as he would be inspired by his brothers and yearned to get behind the wheel himself. In 1950, he competed in his first race: The Tour of Italy, where he crashed into a monument. In 1952, he was given a chance to race with Maserati and became the Italian two-liter sports car champion as a result. In 1954, he won the Copa Acerbo, a non-championship F1 race and achieved his first podium finish in that debut season as well. At the end of the year, he switched to Ferrari, jointly winning his first race at the Argentine Grand Prix in 1956. He had a few good results that year but a crash at the Nurburgring cut short his season.

In 1957, he stayed with Ferrari and won a few titles that were not part of the Drivers’ Championship. His first win was the City of Buenos Aires city sports car race, followed by the Targa Florio and the Grand Prix de la Marne. He became a regular member of the Ferrari team following the death of teammate Eugenio Castellotti. He recorded a credible third place in the drivers’ championship that year.

The 1958 season began superbly for Musso as he achieved two second place finishes in the first three races before tragedy struck at the French Grand Prix at Reims. During the 10th lap, he was chasing his teammate Mike Hawthorn at the tricky Muizone Curve when his car hurtled off the track into a ditch and he was thrown out. He suffered critical injuries and died later that day in the hospital.

During his short career, Musso won one Grand Prix, had seven podium finishes and collected 44 championship points. That was no mean feat back in those days. He was a gifted driver with a distinct driving style which made him one of the last in his generation of great Italian drivers.
