PROFILE
Gilles Villeneuve

Born on Jan 18th, 1950, in Quebec, Canada, Gilles Villeneuve was a Formula One racing driver from the eighties. Known for his candidness, honesty and determination, Villeneuve was a champion waiting to happen, until Zolder, 1982.

Villeneuve senior started his career in racing by participating in professional snow mobile races, before moving on to single seater racing in North America. After winning the US and Canadian Formula Atlantic championships in 1976, he was offered a one of drive for McLaren in the ‘77 British Grand Prix. Later that year he was picked up by Ferrari, the team he would race with, for the next five years.

His debut year saw him race only three times without scoring a single point. 1978 was his first full season in Formula One. Partnering Carlos Reutemann, he secured his first race win at the season ending Canadian Grand Prix, which was incidentally his home race as well. In 1979, Villeneuve was joined by Jody Scheckter, after Reutemann left for the Lotus team. This was a great year for the scarlet team, with Scheckter and Villeneuve finishing one-two in the championship. This was Villeneuve’s highest finish in his career, missing out on the title by just four points. After a less than impressive 1980 year, where Ferrari mustered up only eight points all season, Scheckter retired from Formula One, paving the way for Didier Pironi.

The 1981 season saw Ferrari pick up two race wins, both by the Canadian driver, in an otherwise ordinary season. Villeneuve finished 7th in the standings, with 25 points. 1982 was the year in which the Canadian was widely tipped to become the World Champion, but an accident in qualifying at the Belgian Grand Prix cut short his career, and his life.

Villeneuve fans still blame the late Pironi for causing the crash that killed the Canadian driver, for they say that if Pironi had not snatched the win away from Villeneuve at the San Marino Grand Prix, the race preceding the tragedy, his state of mind would have been different, and the crash possibly avoided. All said and done, after Zolder, the world was left to mourn the loss of a great driver, a fabulous human being, and a champion sportsman.

But although Giles Villeneuve left this world with an unfulfilled dream of winning a World championship, his son Jaques Villeneuve grew up to sit in a cockpit and complete his father’s dream by winning the 1997 World Championship.

QUOTES ON GILLES VILLENEUVE

"If someone said to me that you can have three wishes, my first would have been to get into racing, my second to be in Formula 1, my third to drive for Ferrari.”
