BrawnWhat does it take for an F1 team, worth a few hundred millions, with drivers like Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button, and cars powered by Mercedes engines to take form in a matter of months? Well in Brawn GP’s case – it’s a combination of global recession, high costs, a lot of debates and a large-hearted team principal.

When Honda Motor Company decided to pull out its Honda team from Formula One in December 2008, citing the economic downfall and a business back home in Japan that had taken a hit, there was a lot of anxiety in the F1 world. The first repercussions were changes in FIA rules for the 2009 season to cut expenses and as various permutations were being worked out, Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button suddenly found themselves standing outside the racing arena, without moving an inch on their own.

Initially, a Brackley-based millionaire, Carlos Slim was reported interested in buying the team, later it was Virgin Group’s Richard Branson and some sources even mentioned Indian business tycoon Dr. Vijay Mallya’s interest in buying out the team. As things unfurled after several discussions between the FIA, the team and interested parties, it was Ross Brawn who was at the helm of the proceedings and in March 2009, he bought over the team with a little over $200 million and with some help from Honda’s funds reserved for the 2009 season and Bernie Ecclestone’s contribution, evolved Brawn GP, named after Team Principal Ross Brawn.

The team was seen racing at the opening Grand Prix in Australia on the 29th of March 2009, with Barrichello and Button retaining their drives for the erstwhile Honda Racing team.

The Brawn GP cars, powered by Mercedes-Benz engines started off the season with a victory for Jenson Button in Australia and within the first half of the season, had six wins. The team led in the constructors' standings right from the start and created history after sealing the title with one race to spare, in the Brazilian GP.

After the end of the 2009 season, Mercedes-Benz (through parent Daimler AG), in partnership with Aabar Investments, reached an agreement to purchase a 75.1% stake (Daimler: 45.1%; Aabar: 30%), in the Brawn GP team. The new team came to be known as Mercedes GP and hired 7-time World Champion Michael Schumcher and Nico Rosberg to drive in the 2010 season.

It was the first return of Mercedes as a team since 1955 and that of legendary driver Schumacher. The two together can rewrite history once again to change F1's record books, forever.
